Word List Recall

Word list recall is a cognitive assessment in which individuals study a sequence of words and later retrieve as many as possible, providing a measure of verbal learning and memory. During the task, words are encoded into memory, often across repeated learning trials, and then retrieved through free recall after a brief delay or an interfering activity; performance reflects encoding efficiency, retention, and retrieval processes. Psychologists use word list recall to study attention, working memory, and episodic memory, and to evaluate changes associated with aging, neurological conditions, psychiatric disorders, or cognitive interventions. Recall patterns can help distinguish learning difficulties from impaired long-term retention.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Why is it relatively hard to remember everything on a shopping list if it includes more than just a handful of items? Why is it possible to remember a phone number that one just heard, but not two or three phone numbers at once? Why is it difficult to remember names when several new people are introduced at the same time? The answer has to do with the fact that over short-durations people rely on a specialized memory system...

We present a protocol to explore the relative activation sequence of phonology and semantics in visual word recognition. The results show that consistent with interactive accounts, semantic and phonological representations may be processed interactively, and higher-level linguistic representations may affect early processing.
