The Second Law of Thermodynamics

Entropy, abbreviated as S, is the thermodynamic measure of disorder or randomness. Systems with more disorder have a higher entropy than those with less disorder.
For example, an unfolded amino acid chain has higher entropy than when the chain is properly folded because the linear chain is more flexible and unorganized than a tightly packed protein.
The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system always increases. This means everything becomes more disordered without outside input.
Isolated systems rarely occur naturally, so thermodynamics often examines the change in entropy of the entire universe. The change in the entropy of the universe includes both entropy changes of the system being studied and its surroundings.
A process where the entropy of the universe increases, that is, one which has a &#916;&#8203;S greater than zero, occurs spontaneously. A process where entropy decreases or has a&#160;&#8722;&#916;S is not spontaneous and needs energy input to occur.

In the quest to identify a property that may reliably predict the spontaneity of a process, a promising candidate has been identified: entropy. Scientists refer to the measure of randomness or disorder within a system as entropy. High entropy means high disorder and low energy. To better understand entropy, think of a student&#8217;s bedroom. If no energy or work were put into it, the room would quickly become messy. It would exist in a very disordered state, one of high entropy. Energy must be put into the system, in the form of the student doing work and putting everything away, in order to bring the room back to a state of cleanliness and order. This state is one of low entropy.
Processes that involve an increase in entropy of the system (&#916;S &#62; 0) are very often spontaneous; however, examples to the contrary are plentiful. By expanding consideration of entropy changes to include the surroundings, we may reach a significant conclusion regarding the relation between this property and spontaneity. In thermodynamic models, the system and surroundings comprise everything, that is, the universe, and so the following is true:

The second law of thermodynamics states that all spontaneous changes cause an increase in the entropy of the universe. A summary of the relation between the entropy and spontaneity of the process is given in the table 1.

Entropy helps predict whether a process will happen on its own. Entropy is a measure of randomness or disorder in a system. High entropy means high disorder and low energy. A student’s bedroom is a simple example. If no work is done, the room becomes messy over time. That messy state is highly disordered and has high entropy. To make the room clean again, energy must be added as the student puts things away. That organized state has low entropy.

Processes that increase the entropy of the system, written as ΔS &gt; 0, are often spontaneous. Spontaneous means a process can occur without outside help. However, there are many exceptions. To understand spontaneity more fully, entropy changes in the surroundings must also be included. In thermodynamic models, the system and its surroundings make up the universe. The total change in entropy is written as ΔSuniv = ΔSsys + ΔSsurr.

The second law of thermodynamics connects entropy with spontaneous change. It states that all spontaneous changes increase the entropy of the universe. If ΔSuniv is greater than 0, the process is spontaneous. If ΔSuniv is less than 0, the process is nonspontaneous, although the opposite direction would be spontaneous. If ΔSuniv equals 0, the system is at equilibrium.
