IUPAC Nomenclature of Carboxylic Acids

Carboxylic acids are compounds with a &#8211;COOH functional group.
For the IUPAC nomenclature of monocarboxylic acids, identify the parent chain containing the &#8211;COOH carbon and replace the terminal -e of the corresponding alkane with the suffix -oic acid.
Number the chain from the &#8211;COOH end and identify the substituents and their locant values.
Lastly, assemble the name and indicate the stereochemistry. 
In the case of unsaturation, the parent name derives from the corresponding alkene or alkyne.
To nomenclate dicarboxylic acids, select the parent chain that includes both the &#8211;COOH carbons and number from the end that gives the lowest locant to the substituents. Here, retain the terminal -e of the parent hydrocarbon and add the suffix -dioic acid.
If the &#8211;COOH group is bonded to a ring, -carboxylic acid is suffixed to the parent name, and the numbering begins from the ring carbon bearing the &#8211;COOH group.
In the presence of multiple &#8211;COOH groups, prefixes di- or tri- are used.

IUPAC names of carboxylic acids are systematically derived following a few rules discussed below.
For acyclic saturated monocarboxylic acids, the longest hydrocarbon chain containing the &#8211;COOH carbon is identified as the parent chain. Then, the last -e of the parent hydrocarbon name is replaced with a suffix -oic acid.

Numbering the parent carbon chain is performed starting from the &#8211;COOH carbon. The names and positions of the substituent are then listed alphabetically as a prefix to the parent name. Some examples are given below:

It is to be noted that all other functional groups like -CHO, -CO-, -OH, -OR, -NH2, and halogens are given less priority over the &#8211;COOH group, and thus they are treated as substituents in the presence of &#8211;COOH groups.
Unsaturated carboxylic acids are named after the parent alkene or alkyne. The position of multiple bonds is indicated by a locant prefixed to the parent alkene or alkyne. The cis/trans or E/Z notations are prefixed to the parent alkene to indicate the stereochemistry around the double bond.

Acyclic dicarboxylic acids have similar nomenclature rules, except that the terminal -e of the parent hydrocarbon is retained, and a suffix -dioic acid is added.

Compounds containing more than two &#8211;COOH groups are sometimes named by treating one of them as a substituent. For example, the carboxylic acid shown below treats the &#8211;CH2COOH group as a substituent and uses the prefix carboxymethyl- to the parent name.

In the case of cyclic carboxylic acids having &#8211;COOH groups directly attached to a cycloalkane ring or an aromatic ring, a suffix -carboxylic acid is added to the parent ring name. However, unlike acyclic carboxylic acids, the ring carbon attached to the &#8211;COOH group is numbered as carbon-1.

Carboxylic acids are named by IUPAC rules that focus on the carboxyl group, –COOH. For acyclic saturated monocarboxylic acids, the longest hydrocarbon chain that includes the –COOH carbon is chosen as the parent chain. The final -e in the parent hydrocarbon name is replaced with -oic acid, and numbering starts at the –COOH carbon.

Substituents are then named and placed as prefixes in alphabetical order. In the presence of a carboxyl group, other groups such as –CHO, –CO–, –OH, –OR, –NH2, and halogens have lower priority. They are treated as substituents instead of the main functional group.

Unsaturated carboxylic acids follow the name of the parent alkene or alkyne. A locant is added to show the position of each multiple bond. If needed, cis/trans or E/Z notation is placed before the parent name to show the arrangement around a double bond.

Acyclic dicarboxylic acids use similar rules, but the terminal -e of the parent hydrocarbon name is kept. The suffix -dioic acid is added instead. Compounds with more than two –COOH groups are sometimes named by treating one carboxyl-containing part as a substituent. In that case, a prefix such as carboxymethyl- may be used.

Cyclic carboxylic acids use a different ending when the –COOH group is attached directly to a cycloalkane ring or an aromatic ring. The ring name is followed by -carboxylic acid. In these compounds, the ring carbon bonded to the –COOH group is numbered as carbon-1.

Carboxylic Acid Bands in IR and UV-Vis

Carboxylic acids show clear signals in both IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Their IR spectra help identify the C=O bond and the O-H bond, while UV-Vis spectra show a weak absorption from an n→π* transition. In IR spectroscopy, the C=O bond usually appears as a characteristic band between 1710 and 1760 cm⁻¹. The O-H bond gives a broad band between 2500 and 3300 cm⁻¹.
