Description

Malonic acid derivatives can lose a carboxyl group as carbon dioxide during decarboxylation. This reaction is a useful way to turn a β-dicarboxylic acid into a monocarboxylic acid. It follows a pattern similar to the thermal decarboxylation of β-keto acids, which form ketones.
