Types of Hormones

Hormones can be classified into steroids, eicosanoids, amino acid-based derivatives, and peptide hormones based on their structures.
Steroids and eicosanoids are lipid-soluble hormones.
Steroids are derived from cholesterol and contain four connected carbon rings with different side chains attached. Estradiol, released from ovaries, and testosterone from testes are examples of steroid hormones.
Eicosanoids are derived from arachidonic acid and include prostaglandins&#160; and leukotrienes
Amines, peptides, and glycoproteins are water-soluble hormones.
Amine hormones are synthesized from a single amino acid.
Epinephrine is a tyrosine derivative. It is also known as adrenaline and triggers the fight-or-flight response during stressful situations.
Melatonin is a tryptophan derivative that regulates the sleep-wake cycle.
Peptide hormones are chains of amino acids. The pancreas produces the peptide hormone insulin after a meal, which stimulates cells to absorb excess glucose from the blood.
Some peptide hormones, such as the thyroid-stimulating hormone, are glycoproteins with carbohydrate chains attached to the peptide.

Steroids and eicosanoids fall under the category of lipid-soluble hormones. Steroids are derived from cholesterol and feature four interconnected carbon rings with variable side chains. Notable examples include estradiol from ovaries and testosterone from testes, exemplifying the critical roles of these lipid-soluble hormones in reproductive physiology. Eicosanoids, derived from arachidonic acid, encompass prostaglandins and leukotrienes, exerting localized effects in various physiological processes like injury and infection.
In contrast, water-soluble hormones include amines, peptides, and glycoproteins. Amine hormones, synthesized from a single amino acid, include epinephrine, a tyrosine derivative commonly known as adrenaline. This hormone is pivotal in instigating the fight-or-flight response during stressful situations. Another notable example is melatonin, derived from tryptophan, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Peptide hormones comprise amino acid chains, such as the insulin from the pancreas. After meals, the insulin released in the blood signals cells to absorb excess glucose from the bloodstream, contributing to glucose homeostasis. Additionally, certain peptide hormones, like the thyroid-stimulating hormone, possess glycoprotein attributes featuring carbohydrate chains appended to the peptide structure.

Hormones can be grouped by their structure and how they act in the body. The main groups are steroids, eicosanoids, amino acid-based derivatives, and peptide hormones. These categories help explain why some hormones travel easily through cell membranes while others act in more local ways.

Steroids and eicosanoids are lipid-soluble hormones, which means they dissolve in fats. Steroids come from cholesterol and have four linked carbon rings with different side chains. Examples include estradiol from the ovaries and testosterone from the testes, and both play key roles in reproduction.

Eicosanoids also belong to the lipid-soluble group. They come from arachidonic acid and include prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Their effects are usually local and are important in processes such as injury and infection.

Water-soluble hormones include amines, peptides, and glycoproteins. Amine hormones are made from a single amino acid. Epinephrine, also called adrenaline, is a tyrosine derivative that helps trigger the fight-or-flight response during stress. Melatonin is another amine hormone. It comes from tryptophan and helps control the sleep-wake cycle.

Peptide hormones are chains of amino acids. Insulin is one example, and it is released by the pancreas after meals. It signals cells to take up extra glucose from the blood and helps maintain glucose homeostasis. Some peptide hormones, such as thyroid-stimulating hormone, also have carbohydrate chains and are called glycoproteins.

The primary functions of the nervous system are sensation, integration and response. A comparison of the structures and functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems should be explored. The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes the remaining nervous tissue. A neuron consists of dendrites, a cell body and an axon. Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS).
