Pipe fittings and valves can cause head loss in a pipe system. These losses happen when flow is disturbed by bends, expansions, entries, exits, and other components. The fluid loses energy because the flow becomes less steady and more turbulent.

Valves are a major source of minor loss because they block or guide the fluid path. A closed valve or a partly closed valve adds resistance and creates turbulence. The amount of energy loss depends on the valve shape, its position, and the way the flow moves through it.

Engineers describe this effect with a loss coefficient, K. The head loss from a component depends on K and on the square of the fluid velocity, V. For easier design calculations, minor losses from valves and fittings are often written as an equivalent length of straight pipe that would produce the same head loss.

Entrance loss can also occur where fluid enters a pipe. Sharp edges or sudden changes in area can make the fluid separate from the wall. This separation creates turbulence and viscous energy loss.
