Cognitive psychology emerged in the mid-20th century and studies how individuals process and use information to remember, think, and understand their surroundings.
This field attempts to explain how and why individuals think the way they do by studying the interactions among human thinking, emotion, creativity, language, and problem-solving.
The rise of computers in the 1950s, capable of performing logical operations, offered a new way to understand the human mind, suggesting that human mental processes might be similarly structured.
Herbert Simon, a cognitive psychologist, compared the brain to a computer&#39;s hardware and cognition to software.
He explained that sensory systems, such as vision and hearing, provide an input channel, like data entering a computer that is processed by mental operations like perception and memory.
Despite the usefulness of this analogy, significant differences exist between computers and human brains.
Simon argued that while computers handle pre-coded, unambiguous information, the human brain processes ambiguous sensory input from the environment.

Cognitive psychology is the field of psychology dedicated to examining how people think. It attempts to explain how and why we think the way we do by studying the interactions among human thinking, emotion, creativity, language, and problem-solving, as well as other cognitive processes. Cognitive psychology studies how information is processed and manipulated in remembering, thinking, and knowing.
This field emerged in the mid-20th century, following a period dominated by behaviorism, which focused on observable behavior and dismissing the study of mental processes. The shift began in the 1950s with the advent of computers and took off after psychologists recognized the limitations of behaviorism, particularly its inability to explain complex processes like language acquisition, offering a new way to conceptualize the human mind.
Early computers, like those developed by John von Neumann, demonstrated that machines could perform logical operations. Psychologists began to see computers as a model for human cognition. Herbert Simon at Carnegie-Mellon University was a pioneer in understanding cognitive and behavioral processes of rational decision-making. He used the computer as an analogy&#160; to explain mental processes, linking the brain to hardware and cognition to software. Sensory and perceptual systems provide input, which is processed by mental operations, stored in memory, and retrieved as responses, similarly to how computers handle data.
Despite the usefulness of this analogy, there are significant differences between computers and human brains. Computers process pre-coded, unambiguous information, while the brain handles ambiguous sensory input. Computers excel in speed, accuracy, and consistency in rule application, but they lack self-awareness and consciousness, which are intrinsic to human minds.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has grown out of this computer-cognition analogy, aiming to create machines capable of intelligent behavior. AI excels in tasks requiring speed, persistence, and extensive memory, aiding in fields like medical diagnosis, equipment evaluation, and educational advising. The developing field of cognitive robotics seeks to equip robots with human-like, intelligent behavior, enabling them to perceive, learn, reason, and make decisions.

Cognitive psychology studies how people think, remember, and understand information. It looks at how thinking works with emotion, creativity, language, and problem-solving. The field focuses on how information is processed and changed during remembering, thinking, and knowing.

Cognitive psychology emerged in the mid-20th century after behaviorism had dominated psychology. Behaviorism focused on observable behavior and did not study mental processes. In the 1950s, computers helped spark a new way to study the mind. Psychologists also saw that behaviorism could not explain complex skills such as language acquisition.

Early computers, including those developed by John von Neumann, showed that machines could carry out logical operations. This led psychologists to use computers as a model for human cognition. Herbert Simon at Carnegie-Mellon University was a pioneer in studying rational decision-making and cognitive and behavioral processes. He compared the brain to hardware and cognition to software to explain mental activity.

In this model, sensory and perceptual systems provide input. Mental operations then process that input, store it in memory, and retrieve it as responses. The idea is similar to how a computer handles data. Even so, the comparison has limits because computers use pre-coded, unambiguous information, while the brain must handle ambiguous sensory input.

Computers are fast, accurate, and consistent when applying rules. Human minds are different because they include self-awareness and consciousness. Artificial intelligence, or AI, grew from this computer-cognition analogy and aims to create machines that can act intelligently. AI is useful in medical diagnosis, equipment evaluation, and educational advising, and cognitive robotics is developing robots that can perceive, learn, reason, and make decisions.
