Robert Sternberg proposed the Triarchic theory of intelligence, which divides intelligence into three types — analytical, creative, and practical.
Analytical intelligence involves the ability to analyze, evaluate, judge, compare, contrast, and solve problems logically.
This form of intelligence is often associated with academic performance and tasks that require critical thinking, such as comparing contrasting ideas in an English class or solving complex math problems.
Creative intelligence is the ability to generate new ideas and solutions and solve new problems effectively.
This form of intelligence highlights imagination and creativity in solving novel challenges and is associated with activities like inventing new products or composing music.
Practical intelligence refers to applying knowledge to real-life situations, such as managing everyday tasks, understanding social dynamics, and making decisions that are practical and beneficial in everyday life.
Sternberg argues that these three types of intelligence are distinct but interconnected, with each playing a crucial role in different aspects of life.

Triarchic Theory of Intelligence

Robert Sternberg's triarchic theory of intelligence posits that intelligence is composed of three distinct but interrelated components: analytical, creative, and practical intelligence.

Analytical Intelligence: This type of intelligence is most aligned with traditional views of intelligence, such as those measured by IQ tests. It involves the ability to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems logically. This form of intelligence is often associated with academic performance and tasks that require critical thinking, such as comparing and contrasting ideas or solving complex math problems.

Creative Intelligence: Creative intelligence is the ability to think “outside the box,” generate novel ideas, and create original solutions to problems. This form of intelligence is evident in activities like inventing new products, composing music, or developing innovative solutions in unexpected situations. It emphasizes the importance of imagination and creativity in solving everyday challenges.

Practical Intelligence: Often referred to as "street smarts," practical intelligence involves the ability to apply knowledge to real-world situations effectively. It includes skills such as managing everyday tasks, understanding social dynamics, and making decisions that are practical and beneficial in everyday life. This type of intelligence is crucial for navigating personal and professional environments and is not always reflected in traditional IQ scores. According to Sternberg, individuals with high practical intelligence can enter unfamiliar situations, such as a new job, and quickly discern how to behave and prioritize tasks to achieve success.

Sternberg's theory challenges the traditional, singular view of intelligence, arguing that practical and creative intelligence is just as important as analytical intelligence in predicting success in life. This broader understanding of intelligence recognizes that individuals may excel in different areas, reflecting a more holistic view of human cognitive abilities.

KEY TERMS AND CONCEPTS

sternberg's three types of intelligence

Robert Sternberg's theory of intelligence divides mental ability into three connected parts: analytical intelligence, creative intelligence, and practical intelligence. This model shows that intelligence is not just one skill. It includes different ways people think and solve problems.

Analytical intelligence is the type most like traditional IQ-based thinking. It involves analyzing information, evaluating ideas, and solving problems with logic. This form of intelligence is often linked to school success and tasks that need critical thinking, such as comparing and contrasting ideas or solving complex math problems.

Creative intelligence is the ability to think outside the box and come up with original ideas. It helps people generate novel solutions to problems. This type of intelligence can appear in work like inventing new products, composing music, or finding new answers in unexpected situations.

Practical intelligence is often called street smarts. It is the ability to use knowledge in real-world situations. It includes handling everyday tasks, understanding social situations, and making practical decisions. Sternberg says people with strong practical intelligence can enter a new job or other unfamiliar setting and quickly figure out how to behave and what to do first.

Sternberg's theory challenges the idea that intelligence is only measured one way. It argues that practical intelligence and creative intelligence matter as much as analytical intelligence in predicting success in life. This broader view shows that people may be strong in different areas, which gives a more complete picture of human thinking abilities.

introduction to cognitive psychology

Cognitive Psychology and the Computer Model

Cognitive psychology studies how people think, remember, and understand information. It looks at how thinking works with emotion, creativity, language, and problem-solving. The field focuses on how information is processed and changed during remembering, thinking, and knowing. Cognitive psychology emerged in the mid-20th century after behaviorism had dominated psychology. Behaviorism focused on observable behavior and did not study mental processes. In the 1950s, computers helped spark a new...

concepts and prototypes

How the Brain Groups Ideas

The brain groups ideas into concepts and uses prototypes to sort new information. Sensory stimuli first become neural impulses, and the brain processes them into thoughts, language, and memories. Emotions and memories also shape this process, helping create a full mental picture. Concepts are mental categories that organize linguistic data, images, ideas, and memories. They keep knowledge orderly and easy to use. Concepts can be abstract, such as justice, or concrete, such as members of...

natural and artificial concepts

Concepts Built from Experience and Rules

Natural and artificial concepts help explain how people organize ideas in psychology. Natural concepts come from direct or indirect experience. They are built from what a person sees, hears, touches, or reads about over time. Snow is a clear example of a natural concept. A student in Essex Junction, Vermont may know snow from direct experience by seeing it fall, touching it, shoveling it, and playing in it. A student in Saint Vincent in the Caribbean may know snow only through indirect...

schemata

Schemata and Everyday Behavior

Schemata are mental constructs that organize related ideas and help the brain process information efficiently. When a schema is activated, it can shape the assumptions people make about people or objects. One important type is the role schema. This is the set of expectations tied to a specific role, such as a firefighter. A firefighter schema may bring to mind bravery and a focus on community, but these expectations are not always correct. Role schemata can also support biases and stereotypes...

language

Language as Human Symbol System

Language is a human communication system that uses words and rules to share information. It depends on symbols and grammar. That makes it different from communication that uses postures, movements, odors, or vocalizations. People use language to speak, write, or sign. It supports listening, reading, and writing. Language also shapes inner speech, or the silent self-talk people use in their minds. This ability helps explain why language is often seen as a key part of what makes humans unique...

components of language

Language Structure: Sounds, Words, and Meaning

Language is built from sounds, words, and rules for meaning. It can be spoken, signed, or written. The two main parts are the lexicon and grammar. The lexicon is the vocabulary of a language, and grammar is the set of rules that helps speakers use those words to communicate. Words begin with phonemes, the basic sound units of language. Different languages use different sets of phonemes, such as sounds like "ah" and "eh." Phonemes combine to form morphemes, which are the smallest units of...

language development

Stages of Language Development

Language development follows a clear sequence from early sound recognition to full sentences. It begins very early, even before birth. Babies are already tuned to speech, and newborns often prefer their mother’s voice. They can also tell the difference between their mother’s language and other languages. Researchers have explained language learning in different ways. B. F. Skinner argued that language is learned through reinforcement. Noam Chomsky argued that language ability is biologically...

language and cognition

How Language Shapes Thinking

Language shapes how people think, speak, and understand the world. Psychologists have debated whether language changes thought or whether thought comes first. The idea became well known in the 1940s through Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf. They proposed linguistic determinism, the view that a language’s words and grammar determine how its speakers think and perceive reality. Sapir and Whorf argued that vocabulary can affect how people experience ideas. For example, languages with several...

problem-solving

Problem-Solving Strategies in Psychology

Problem-solving strategies help people find solutions after they identify the problem. Effective problem-solving has two steps. First, a person must identify the problem. Then they choose a plan of action that fits the situation. One strategy is trial and error. This means testing different solutions until one works. Thomas Edison used this approach when he tested thousands of filaments for the light bulb. It is not the most efficient method, but it can be useful when there is no clear path. <br...

trial and error and algorithm

Problem-Solving: Trial, Error, and Rules

Problem-solving strategies use different action plans to reach a solution. Trial and error is one common strategy. It means trying different solutions until one works. For example, fixing a broken printer may involve checking the ink levels, making sure the paper tray is not jammed, and confirming that the printer is connected to a laptop. Trial and error is useful, but it can take a long time. It is often used when there are only a few possible solutions to test. Thomas Edison used this...

heuristics

Heuristics in Everyday Problem Solving

Heuristics are problem-solving strategies that use mental shortcuts to make decisions easier. They give people a general way to solve a problem without following every step exactly. Unlike algorithms, which must be followed precisely to reach the correct result, heuristics are faster but can sometimes lead to less rational choices. People often use heuristics when there is too much information to process, not enough time, or not enough data. They are also common when the decision is not very...

reasoning

Reasoning in Problem Solving

Reasoning in problem solving is the process of thinking in a logical, sensible way to reach a conclusion. It helps people make decisions and think critically. Reasoning turns information into conclusions, which is useful in science and everyday life. One common type is inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning means making a general rule from specific observations. It helps people form beliefs about the world. For example, if a cell phone is turned on many times and never explodes, a person may...

decision making

Automatic vs. Controlled Decisions

Decision-making is a basic cognitive process that helps people compare options and choose one. It can cover small choices, like what to wear, and larger ones, like picking a college major or a career path. The type of choice often shapes how the brain handles it. One approach is automatic decision-making. It is fast and intuitive, and it depends on gut feelings instead of careful reasoning. People often use it when they need to decide quickly or when the choice has low stakes, such as picking...

critical thinking

Critical Thinking in Science and School

Critical thinking in science and school means reflective, productive thinking that depends on evaluating evidence. Students who think critically try to understand the deeper meaning of ideas. They question assumptions and make independent choices about what to believe or do. Scientists often use critical thinking because they must look beyond the obvious. Good critical thinking also includes humility about what we know and what we do not know. That attitude helps people stay focused on the...

creative thinking

Divergent and Convergent Thinking

Creative thinking helps people solve problems with new and unusual ideas. It is not limited to improving an existing system. For example, instead of only trying to make a smartphone battery larger, creative thinking may lead to energy-efficient batteries or processors that use less power. This broader approach opens new paths to innovation. A key part of creative thinking is divergent thinking. Divergent thinking means generating many possible solutions to one problem. It often appears during...

intelligence

How Cultures Define Intelligence

Intelligence can mean different things across cultures. It refers to both behavior and individual ability, but people do not always define it the same way. In European American settings, intelligence is often linked to reasoning and cognitive skills. In other places, it is tied to social responsibility, memory, or practical skill. In Kenya, intelligence is connected to responsible participation in family and social life. In Uganda, it means knowing the right action and carrying it out...

cattell's theory of intelligence

Fluid vs. Crystallized Intelligence

Raymond Cattell and John Horn helped show that intelligence is not just one ability. They described two related but different kinds of intelligence: fluid intelligence and crystallized intelligence. Fluid intelligence is the ability to solve new problems and adjust to unfamiliar situations. People use it when they face a novel puzzle or need to think in a new way. Figuring out how to use a new gadget is one example of fluid intelligence. Crystallized intelligence is the knowledge and skills...

multiple intelligences theory

Gardner’s 9 Intelligences Explained

Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences describes nine distinct ways people can understand and interact with the world. First introduced in 1983 and later expanded, the framework challenges the idea that intelligence is only one general ability. Instead, it suggests that people may show strengths in different areas. Verbal-linguistic intelligence is the ability to think in words and use language to express ideas. Logical-mathematical intelligence supports math operations and logical...

measures of intelligence

How Psychologists Evaluate IQ Tests

Psychologists use standardized tests to measure intelligence, and the score they produce is called the intelligence quotient, or IQ. IQ tests are built around three key ideas: validity, reliability, and standardization. These principles help make the score meaningful and fair. Validity means a test measures what it claims to measure. For an intelligence test, that means it should assess intelligence rather than something else, like anxiety. One way to check this is criterion validity, which...

binet's contribution to measures of intelligence

Binet and the First Intelligence Test

Alfred Binet and Théophile Simon created an early intelligence test to help identify students who had trouble learning through regular classroom instruction. In 1904, the French Ministry of Education asked them to design a method for this purpose. The goal was also to reduce overcrowding by placing some students in specialized schools. Binet and Simon built a test with 30 tasks. Some tasks were simple, such as touching the nose or ear after a command. Others were more complex, such as copying...

wechsler's contribution to measures of intelligence

wechsler-s-contribution-to-measures-of-intelligence

Wechsler IQ Tests and What They Measure

David Wechsler developed IQ tests that measure several parts of intelligence, not just one score. He was a psychologist who worked with World War I veterans, and in 1939 he created the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale. His view of intelligence included purposeful action, rational thinking, and effective interaction with the environment. The Wechsler-Bellevue scale was innovative because it combined verbal and nonverbal subtests. A subtest is a smaller part of a larger test. This design...

the bell curve

Normal Distribution in Intelligence Scores

The normal distribution is a bell-shaped pattern used to describe many kinds of data, including intelligence test scores. It is symmetrical, with most values clustered around the mean, or average, and fewer values found farther from the center. Mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss is closely linked to this pattern. This curve also appears in many natural measurements beyond intelligence, such as height. If a large group of women were measured, most heights would fall in the middle range. Fewer...

biological influences on intelligence

How Brain Growth Shapes Intelligence

Intelligence is shaped by brain size, brain structure, genes, and environment. Brain size has a modest link to some skills, especially verbal ability, but it is a weaker predictor for spatial reasoning. This means intelligence cannot be explained by size alone. Brain structure also matters. For example, Einstein had a smaller-than-average brain, but his parietal cortex was 15% wider. The parietal cortex helps with spatial reasoning, so this suggests that neural density may matter more than...

environmental influences on intelligence

How Early Childhood Shapes IQ

Early childhood experiences can shape intelligence and IQ. Genetics matter, but a child’s environment can still change outcomes in a meaningful way. Research shows that enriched surroundings support academic success and help children build important thinking skills. The transcript also shows that environment affects other traits, such as height. Even though more than 90% of height variation comes from genetic differences, nutrition still plays a clear role. The same pattern appears in...
