The central nervous system, or CNS, is the largest part of the nervous system. It is made up of two main parts: the brain and the spinal cord.

The brain sits safely inside the skull, while the spinal cord is protected by the bones of the spine, called vertebrae. Together, they help manage everything from your heartbeat to your thoughts.
