The Vitek 2 system automates microbial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing in clinical microbiology. It helps labs identify pathogens quickly and produce standardized results that support patient care.

For identification, a pure microbial colony is first turned into a standardized suspension. That suspension is placed into an ID card, which has many wells filled with specific biochemical substrates. Separate ID cards are used for Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and yeasts. As the microbe uses the substrates, the wells can change in color or turbidity. The instrument tracks these changes and builds a biochemical profile.

The profile is compared with an internal database to identify the organism at the species level. This automated match improves speed and reproducibility compared with manual work.

The system also performs antibiotic susceptibility testing, or AST. An AST card contains antibiotics at set concentrations in its wells. The analyzer watches how the microbe grows over time. Little or no growth suggests susceptibility, while clear growth suggests resistance. From these results, the system calculates the minimum inhibitory concentration, or MIC, which is the lowest antibiotic level that stops visible growth.
