Question 1

What is the main structural difference between globular and fibrous proteins?

Accepted Answer

Globular proteins are compact, spheroid-shaped molecules with their amino acid chains wound tightly, while fibrous proteins form extended, elongated structures. Globular proteins typically contain a mixture of alpha-helices and beta-sheets, whereas fibrous proteins usually consist of either alpha-helices or beta-sheets, rarely both. This structural difference reflects their distinct cellular roles.

Question 2

Why are globular proteins typically soluble in water?

Accepted Answer

Globular proteins are water-soluble because their hydrophilic amino acids are positioned on the outer surface, while hydrophobic amino acids pack tightly into the protein's interior. This arrangement allows the protein's exterior to interact favorably with the aqueous cellular environment. This property makes globular proteins ideal for intracellular functions like enzyme catalysis and molecular transport.

Question 3

How do globular proteins form larger functional structures?

Accepted Answer

Globular proteins form larger structures through quaternary structure assembly, where multiple amino acid chains combine into a single functional unit. For example, hemoglobin functions as a tetramer composed of two alpha and two beta subunits. Additionally, many globular actin monomers join together to create long helical protein strands called actin filaments, demonstrating how homomeric and heteromeric protein complex assemblies enable cellular organization.

Question 4

What is the structural composition of collagen and how does it function?

Accepted Answer

Collagen is a fibrous protein composed of an extended alpha helix structure. Three helices wind around each other to form a coiled-coil structure, creating collagen fibrils that provide structural support and flexibility in connective tissues. This triple-helix arrangement gives collagen its characteristic strength and resilience in the extracellular matrix.

Question 5

Where are fibrous proteins typically located and what roles do they serve?

Accepted Answer

Fibrous proteins are primarily located in the extracellular matrix and connective tissues, where they provide structural support and impart strength to tissues. Unlike globular proteins, fibrous proteins are generally not water-soluble but may dissolve in strong acids or bases. Examples include collagen, keratin, elastin, and fibroin, each contributing to tissue integrity and mechanical properties.

Question 6

Why do cells form quaternary protein structures instead of using single long amino acid chains?

Accepted Answer

Cells form quaternary structures and multi-unit protein complexes when larger molecules are needed, rather than synthesizing single extremely long amino acid chains. This approach is more efficient and allows for modular assembly of functional units. Quaternary structures also enable dynamic regulation and specialized functions that individual chains cannot achieve alone.

Question 7

What makes silk a flexible yet strong material at the protein level?

Accepted Answer

Silk's unique properties derive from fibroin, a fibrous protein composed primarily of beta-sheets. The beta-sheet structure provides both flexibility and tensile strength to silk strands. This demonstrates how the secondary structure composition of fibrous proteins directly determines their mechanical properties and functional capabilities in biological materials.
