Each molecule of ribonucleic acid, or RNA is composed of a chain of nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of ribose, a five carbon sugar, attached to a phosphate group on one side and one of four nitrogenous bases on the other, adenine, guanine, cytosine, or uracil.
These bases bind to their complementary bases in DNA during transcription, when messenger RNA, mRNA, is synthesized. Adenine binds to thymine, guanine binds to cytosine, and uracil, which is used in RNA instead of thymine, binds to adenine.
The nucleotides are then linked together through phosphodiester bonds between the phosphate group of one nucleotide and a hydroxyl OH group on the ribose of the adjacent nucleotide, creating a sugar-phosphate backbone.
RNA molecules have a five prime end, with a phosphate group on the five prime carbon of ribose, and a three prime end, with a hydroxyl group on the three prime carbon. RNA is assembled in the five prime to three prime direction, and usually remains single-stranded.
