Systemic circulation involves a complex network of arteries and veins that facilitate the transport of blood between the heart and various organs of the body.
The three main subdivisions of the systemic circulation are the coronary, cerebral, and hepatic portal circulation.
Coronary circulation refers to the blood circulated to the myocardium.
Cerebral circulation supplies blood to the brain, and the hepatic portal circulation extends from the gastrointestinal tract to the liver.
The arteries like bronchial arteries that supply oxygen and nutrients to the lungs are also a part of the systemic circulation.
All systemic arteries originate from the aorta, forming numerous branches that carry oxygenated blood to different body parts.
The deoxygenated blood is returned to the heart through an equally complex network of veins.
Based on the region they drain, the veins join the superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, or the coronary sinus before draining the blood into the heart, completing the circulation.
