The gastrointestinal tract has its own intrinsic set of nerves forming the enteric nervous system or ENS, which is partly controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
The ENS mainly comprises myenteric and submucosal plexuses, which are composed of motor and sensory neurons and interneurons.
The myenteric plexus is located between the longitudinal and circular smooth muscle cells of the muscularis. It primarily controls GI tract motility.
The submucosal plexus is located within the submucosa and mainly governs the secretion mechanisms of the GI tract's organs.
Some parasympathetic neurons from the vagus and pelvic splanchnic nerves synapse with neurons of both these plexuses, while others synapse with smooth muscles and glands They stimulate the ENS and increase activities like GI secretions and peristalsis.
Sympathetic nerves, originating from the thoracic and upper lumbar regions of the spinal cord, also synapse with neurons in the myenteric and submucosal plexuses.
These sympathetic nerves reduce GI secretion and peristalsis by inhibiting ENS neurons.
Emotional states like anger, fear, and anxiety can slow digestion due to sympathetic nerve stimulation to the GI tract.
