Water is the main component of body fluids necessary for homeostasis. It is distributed as the intracellular fluid or ICF and the extracellular fluid or ECF.
About two-thirds of the water is in the ICF, equating to approximately 25 L out of 40 L in an average adult male.
The remaining one-third is in the ECF, which can be further split into sub-compartments - blood plasma and interstitial fluid — the fluid between cells.
The extracellular fluid also encompasses lymph, cerebrospinal fluid, aqueous and vitreous humor, synovial fluid, serous fluid, and gastrointestinal secretions.
The water content of the human body varies based on age, sex, body mass, and body fat percentage.
Among infants, body water content is about 73% of body mass, attributed to less body fat and bone mass.
With age, water content drops to around 45% in older people.
Water constitutes about 60% of the body in healthy young males, while it is 50% in females.
Life's biochemical processes occur within aqueous solutions. Solutes are substances that are dissolved within these solutions. The human body contains…
