Female breasts are hemispheric projections attached anteriorly to the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles by a dense, irregular connective tissue.
Each breast features a pigmented projection, the nipple, surrounded by the circular areola.
Within each breast lies a mammary gland, a modified sweat gland that produces milk. This gland consists of 15 to 20 lobes separated by adipose tissue.
The connective tissue between these lobes forms the suspensory or Cooper's ligaments that support the breasts.
Each lobe is additionally divided into smaller compartments called lobules, composed of grape-like clusters of milk-secreting glands termed alveoli.
When milk is produced, myoepithelial cells surrounding the alveoli contract to propel the milk into secondary tubules. From here, it is pushed into the mammary ducts.
Near the nipple, mammary ducts expand to form lactiferous sinuses, where milk may be stored before draining into a lactiferous duct.
