Angina IV: Management

Effective management of angina involves a multifaceted approach.

Pharmacological treatments include nitrates, such as nitroglycerin; beta-blockers, like metoprolol; calcium channel blockers, including amlodipine; antiplatelet agents, such as aspirin; and anticoagulants, including heparin.

Medical management may involve administering supplemental oxygen to increase oxygen supply to the myocardium, in cases of hypoxemia.

If medications do not relieve angina, percutaneous coronary intervention may be necessary to place and deploy coronary stents. These permanent wire mesh tubes open narrowed coronary arteries.

If conservative therapy fails, a coronary artery bypass graft may be required.

This procedure involves taking a blood vessel from the chest, leg, or arm and attaching it to the coronary artery to bypass the narrowed area or blockage.

Lastly, crucial lifestyle modifications include adopting a balanced diet, engaging in 150 minutes of weekly physical activity, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol intake, and practicing stress-reducing techniques like deep breathing exercises.
