Chemical Reaction

Have you ever noticed fireworks exploding into vibrant colors? That’s a chemical reaction lighting up the sky.

A chemical reaction happens when substances mix or break apart to form something completely new by rearranging atoms.

This rearrangement follows the law of conservation of mass, which means no matter is lost or gained in a chemical reaction.

Imagine you have a LEGO set. First, you build a tall tower, then take it apart and make a truck.

The truck looks totally different, but every single LEGO piece you started with is still there.

This is what happens with atoms in a chemical reaction.

Let’s look at a simple reaction: the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen gases to form water.

Here, two molecules of hydrogen react with one molecule of oxygen to produce two molecules of water.

The hydrogen and oxygen atoms are still there, but now they’re connected in a new way to form water, a new substance.

A color or temperature change or formation of something new indicates a chemical reaction.
