According to this model, emotion arises from a combination of physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation. The body’s physiological response to stimuli is ambiguous and only gains emotional significance through cognitive labeling. For instance, an increased heart rate and adrenaline surge while standing near an attractive person may be interpreted as romantic attraction. In contrast, the same physiological state during an interpersonal conflict might be construed as anger.

Schema Activation

Beyond immediate labeling, cognition influences affect through the activation of mental schemas—organized knowledge structures that guide perception and interpretation. Research in social cognition shows that perceiving someone as a member of an outgroup can activate threat-related schemas, triggering feelings of anxiety or hostility.
