The greatest integer function, also known as the floor function, maps every real number x to the greatest integer less than or equal to x.
For example, the greatest integer function of 7.8 is 7. For integer inputs, the value remains unchanged. So the greatest integer function of 4 is 4, and for -4, it is -4 .
Because the greatest integer function accepts any real number as an input and outputs only integers, its domain is the set of real numbers, and its range is the set of integers.
This function is essential whenever real-world constraints require rounding down. For instance, imagine Sophia, a shipping manager who wants to ship 80-kilogram containers on a ship with a load capacity of 5,000 kilograms.
She wants to know how many containers she can load for safe shipping.
To find this, she divides 5,000 by 80 and gets 62.5. Since she cannot load half a container, Sophia applies the greatest integer function to round 62.5 down to 62, determining that she can safely load a maximum of 62 containers.
The greatest integer function, also known as the floor function, is a fundamental step function that maps every real number to the greatest integer le…
