Truncation

Truncation is the process of stopping a mathematical representation at a selected point, such as cutting off digits in a decimal or terms in an infinite series. Unlike rounding, truncation simply discards information beyond the cutoff without adjusting the retained value, producing a truncation error that depends on where the representation ends and how rapidly omitted terms decrease. In mathematics and numerical analysis, truncation provides finite approximations for functions, derivatives, and solutions that cannot be represented or computed exactly. Understanding truncation error helps researchers assess accuracy, choose suitable computational methods, and balance precision against processing time and storage requirements.

Truncation in Survival Analysis

2025

Truncation in survival analysis refers to the exclusion of individuals or events from the dataset based on specific criteria related to the time of the event. This exclusion can happen in two primary forms: left truncation and right truncation. Left truncation occurs when individuals who experienced the event of interest before a certain time are not included in the study. This is often due to a "delayed entry" into the study where only those who survive until a certain entry point are observed.

We present a procedure to determine the metal-silicate partitioning of siderophile elements, emphasizing techniques that suppress the formation of metal inclusions in experiments for the noble metals. The results of these experiments are used to demonstrate the effect of core-formation on the highly siderophile element composition of the mantle.
