Intestines serve as the critical organ for digestion, absorption, and excretion, maintaining the basic activities for life. Inflammatory diseases of the intestines, such as necrotizing enterocolitis, radiation-induced intestinal injury, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis, increase in morbidity and mortality during the past decades and can lead to intractable sequelae despite treatment advances.
Due to the complex and multifactorial nature of intestinal inflammation, researchers are endeavoring to develop experimental models modulating the situation. The laboratory methodologies for studying intestinal inflammatory diseases have progressed noticeably. In addition to the in vitro and in vivo models, in recent years, ex vivo models that more closely mimic disease progression has emerged. Moreover, effective, and innovative modalities are explored both experimentally and clinically for treating inflammatory diseases of the intestine. Therefore, this Methods Collection aims to integrate and visually illustrate current methods for studying and treating inflammatory diseases of the intestine under collaboration by researchers, which would provide insights into the research field and ultimately benefits the patients in clinical practice.
