Dr. Xiangli Zhao earned her PhD from the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy at the Charité - University Medicine Berlin / Free University of Berlin, Germany in 2018. There she worked in the laboratory of Dr. Hua Fan and Dr. Rupert Mutzel and described the important role of CD26 in T cell function and organ transplantation. She is currently a postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Langone Health. She is working in the laboratory of Dr. Chuanju Liu and her research focuses on the critical role of progranulin in Gaucher disease and inflammatory diseases.

Collection Overview

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is an autoimmune condition with chronic inflammation in the intestines. Different animal models of colonic inflammation resemble several features of IBD. Chemical-induced models are the most commonly used models of IBD, such as dextran sulphate sodium (DSS). The general symptom profile includes diarrhea, rectal bleeding, weight loss, colon shortening, and inflammatory response, etc. The inflammatory response can be accessed by scoring the clinical symptoms, such as weight loss, stool consistency, the severity of rectal bleeding, and the length of the colons. In addition, the overall disease activity index is evaluated. Colonic histological damage can be assessed using the scoring system, and the scores were the combination of inflammatory cells infiltration, muscle thickening, and intestinal wall structure integrity. The manipulation of the inflammatory genes or pro-inflammatory cytokines can be determined using the conventional RT-PCR and ELISA methods. Taken together, these measures can be used to evaluate the intestinal inflammatory response in animal models of experimental colitis.
