University of Michigan, Kellogg Eye Center
Jason Miller, MD, PhD, is the James Grosfeld Endowed Professor and Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, Kellogg Eye Center, at the University of Michigan. He completed his MD and PhD at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease under the mentorship of Steve Finkbeiner, MD, PhD, and did residency and fellowship training at the University of Michigan. He currently directs the James Grosfeld Initiative in Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration, a comprehensive translational research program aimed at dry AMD. As a physician-scientist, his clinical practice is geared towards patients with AMD, and his bench science lab is dedicated to RPE cell biology relevant for dry AMD, with a particular emphasis on RPE lipid handling.

Qitao Zhang
University of Michigan, Kellogg Eye Center
Qitao Zhang, PhD, is a senior research fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology, Kellogg Eye Center, at the University of Michigan. He obtained his PhD from Peking University in China. Qitao is an RPE biologist with extensive experience utilizing primary and induced pluripotent stem cell-derived RPE cultures to probe pathways relevant for dry AMD.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the developed world. Short of treating pathologic neovascularization that sometimes arises as the disease progresses, there are no approved therapies for the ongoing degeneration. AMD likely involves some combination of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) dysfunction, abnormal Bruch’s membrane composition, and choriocapillaris atrophy. This collection aims to compile recent methodologic advances in the field of dry AMD bench science that will improve translational discovery for this disease. This collection will focus on a range of “hot topics” of broad interest to the dry AMD research community, including methods for autophagy measurement in the retina and RPE, induced pluripotent stem cell-derived RPE and choroid differentiation, AI-based assessment of RPE morphology, modeling RPE hypoxia in vitro, quantifying Bruch’s membrane thickness and deposits accurately, and other topics.
