Dr. Xiaolei Xu is a professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Genetics and Genetic Engineering from Fudan University, China in 1989, and PhD in Developmental Genetics from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York in 1999. He started to work with the zebrafish model in 1999 when he was a post-doc fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. He is the director of the Zebrafish Genetics Lab at Mayo Clinic since 2003 and a professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology since 2018. The overall goals of his program are to generate adult zebrafish models of human cardiac diseases, to decipher underlying mechanisms, and to develop mechanism-based therapies.

Dr. Xueying Lin is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Basic Medical Sciences from Beijing University, China, and PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, and did her post-doc training at Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston. She has been developing zebrafish for studying kidney diseases, aiming to establish an embryo-to-adult fish genetic screen platform for deciphering mechanisms and developing novel therapies.

Collection Overview

Zebrafish have historically been used to study developmental genetics due to their favorable embryology and genetics. However, because many human diseases exhibit progressive pathogenesis later in life, there are significant limitations associated with zebrafish embryonic models.

Therefore, adult zebrafish are increasingly being used as a vertebrate model for understanding human disease. To overcome the unique challenges of its small body size, significant progress has been made in recent years in this vertebrate animal to analyze the phenotypes observed in human patients. Here we aim to promote these methods in adult zebrafish ranging from forward genetics, reverse genetics and chemical genetics tools to novel phenotyping methods that can be used to define pathological changes in this model organism.
