Gerard Amorós-Figueras is a postdoctoral research scientist currently working at the Department of Cardiology of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona. He holds a degree in Physics from the University of Barcelona and a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the Chalmers University of Technology. Since 2012, he has worked in the field of experimental cardiology that led him to complete his PhD in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2018. In 2022, he became the principal investigator of a research project to develop a novel system to monitor radiofrequency ablation lesions in real-time based on the measure of local bioimpedance spectroscopy.

Collection Overview

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of heart arrhythmia, affecting 1–2% of the worldwide population. Although substantial advancements have been made in understanding the pathophysiology of AF, the lack of translational models that mimic this clinical entity remains a challenge in deepening our knowledge and improving clinical therapeutic approaches.

This JoVE Methods Collection provides a set of articles related to the development of translational methods to study AF, including:

  • Computational models that simulate the electrical and mechanical properties of the heart.
  • In vitro models that recreate the cellular and molecular events that occur during AF.
  • In vivo translational models that accurately replicate the clinical manifestations of AF in small and large animals.
  • New histological representations to reveal the location of fibrosis areas, which can contribute to the development and progression of AF.
  • Description of novel electrophysiological biomarkers for early detection of AF and local remodeling leading to atrial dysfunction.

Overall, this collection provides a comprehensive resource for basic and clinical researchers studying AF. The novel methods presented in this collection will contribute to the development of new studies at all levels, from basic mechanisms to clinical interventions, ultimately leading to improved management and treatment of AF.
