Dr. Kisoo Kim received his PhD from ICube laboratory, jointly affiliated with CNRS and the University of Strasbourg, France in 2019. During his doctoral studies, he spearheaded the development of a method for integrating magnetic resonance elastography with focused ultrasound (FUS) ablation to effectively monitor changes in tissue elasticity resulting from the ablation process. Currently, Dr. Kim is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He leads multiple projects to advance methods for MR-guided ultrasound hyperthermia and MRI methods for monitoring blood-brain barrier opening with MR-guided transcranial focused ultrasound.

Collection Overview

Focused ultrasound therapies have garnered significant attention for their ability to deliver precise and non-invasive treatments without surgery or ionizing radiation. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has emerged as a powerful tool in planning, monitoring, and evaluating therapeutic ultrasound applications, encompassing both high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) therapies. Precise targeting, real-time monitoring, and assessment of treatment response are essential for successful outcomes.

Real-time MRI monitoring plays a crucial role by enabling clinicians to visualize and accurately target the focal point during the procedure. This feedback allows for necessary adjustments to ensure precise energy delivery while minimizing harm to healthy structures. Additionally, MRI facilitates the evaluation of treatment response by visualizing temperature changes, perfusion alterations, and tissue modifications induced by focused ultrasound energy. This information aids in assessing treatment efficacy, optimizing parameters, and predicting outcomes.

The objective of this collection is to provide a platform for sharing cutting-edge research and methodologies in the field. Researchers interested in this domain can benefit from understanding the advancements and techniques employed in MRI monitoring of focused ultrasound treatments. This knowledge is pivotal for advancing the field and enhancing patient care.
