Dr. Yikui Zhang, M.D., PhD, is an associate professor and attending surgeon at the Affiliated Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University (ranked among China's top national eye hospitals). He obtained a doctoral degree in ophthalmology at Wenzhou Medical University under the supervision of Prof. Wencan Wu. He received research training at the National Eye Institute and National Institutes of Health in the US under the supervision of Dr. Wai T. Wong. He received the residency and chief residency training in ophthalmology at the Affiliated Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University. Prof. Zhang has established a large biofield animal model of traumatic optic neuropathy in goat and rhesus macaques. This allows local treatment and observation at the optic canal and optic chiasm under micro-invasive trans-nasal endoscopy. He is keen to collaborate with basic and clinical scientists to find a translatable therapeutic strategy for optic nerve repair and regeneration.

Collection Overview

Retinal diseases and optic neuropathies encompass a range of conditions that affect the retina and optic nerve, leading to vision impairment and potential blindness. These conditions pose significant challenges in the field of ophthalmology, requiring advanced diagnostic, treatment, and management approaches. Visualized laboratory methods have emerged as valuable tools in understanding the pathophysiology of these diseases and developing effective interventions.

We propose a Methods Collection focusing on laboratory techniques for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of retinal diseases and optic neuropathies.

The collection will cover topics such as optical coherence tomography for diagnosing retinal diseases, visual field testing for optic neuropathies, and advanced imaging techniques for monitoring disease progression and treatment response. Additionally, the collection features methods for cell culture and animal models to study the pathophysiology of these conditions and test new therapies.

In order to enhance clarity and facilitate implementation, the collection will include video demonstrations of the techniques, complemented by detailed written protocols that provide step-by-step instructions and useful tips.

This comprehensive guide will support researchers and clinicians in advancing research on retinal diseases and optic neuropathies. By visualizing these complex laboratory methods, we aim to facilitate widespread adoption and ultimately improve patient outcomes. We look forward to the opportunity to contribute this valuable resource to the Journal of Visualized Experiments.
