University of Toronto, Department of Biology, Assistant Professor

Dr. Samira Ghorbani, a biomedical scientist, earned her PhD in immunology from Tehran University of Medical Science, specializing in the immunopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS), focusing on microRNA research. She pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary under the mentorship of Prof. Wee Yong, a renowned MS researcher. During her postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Ghorbani focused on overcoming inhibitors in MS lesions to enhance tissue repair and remyelination. Now an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, her research explores the intricate relationship between the immune system, oligodendrocytes, and remyelination, particularly in the context of aging. Dr. Ghorbani's career is marked by a commitment to advancing our understanding of neuroimmunology, focusing on discovering novel therapeutic targets.

Collection Overview

Investigating the complex interplay between glial cells and immune cells is critical for understanding the pathophysiology of neuroinflammatory and degenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Current approaches may oversimplify the intricate communication networks between various cells in the CNS.

This Methods Collection aims to address the need for advanced methodologies to unravel the dynamic and context-dependent interactions between glial and immune cells, which play a central role in the initiation and progression of MS. By presenting a diverse array of methodologies, including (but not limited to) advanced imaging techniques and analysis as well as in vitro modeling, this collection will serve as an essential resource for researchers studying the cellular and molecular biology of the CNS.
