The goal of my research program is to model and understand the genetic progression of colorectal cancers from initiation through metastasis. My lab focuses on the critical tumor suppressor SMAD4/Tgfβ pathway, which is mutated in 60% of all cancers, and is often correlated with poorer prognosis in colon cancer patients. I have established genetically engineered mouse models and organoid systems to systematically assess how tumors develop and understand the critical drivers of cancer.

Collection Overview

Cancer is a significant global health problem, responsible for approximately 10 million deaths annually. One of the challenges in fighting cancer is its diversity and heterogeneity, which includes numerous subtypes and subclasses, often with limited treatment options. More sophisticated models are required to simulate molecular and cellular behaviors to better understand complex diseases like cancer.

Organoids are three-dimensional, self-assembling “mini-organs” that can mimic the structure and functions of the corresponding organ. Furthermore, the capability to derive organoids from both normal and cancerous tissue allows researchers to study the molecular differences in a matched specimen, making them valuable tools for a wide range of research applications.

To date, multiple studies have shown the versatility of organoids in both primary and translational research, providing insights into molecular targets for cancer therapeutics, assessment of invasive and migratory behavior in cancer cells, and potential markers of drug resistance. These findings have shown the extensive versatility of organoids as a model system.

This collection aims to highlight the current methods for establishing organoids and various applications of organoids in cancer research.
