Southern Medical University, Stomatological Hospital, School of Stomatology, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. Zhaoqiang Zhang, DDS, is an associate professor at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatological Hospital, School of Stomatology, Southern Medical University. He has been a visiting scholar at Michigan Technological University and Case Western Reserve University, USA. His work broadly concentrates on stomatology's basic and clinical research, primarily oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is interested in tissue engineering and mesenchymal stem cells. He is also involved in oncology research (especially human oral squamous cell carcinoma), specifically targeted therapy (drug delivery system), genetics, molecular biology research, and clinical and histologic findings. In conclusion, his research is focused on oral and maxillofacial (craniofacial) surgery, medicine, pathology, etc.
Lei Chen
First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Department of Burn, Wound Repair & Reconstruction
Dr. Lei Chen, MD, PhD, is a professor at the Department of Burn, Wound Repair & Reconstruction, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. She obtained her PhD at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. She specializes in the research and development of smart biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Oral and maxillofacial trauma, malignant tumors, and congenital malformations can cause oral maxillofacial tissue defects. The maxillofacial region is prominent and performs many irreplaceable functions in the human body, and restoring and reconstructing oral and maxillofacial defects are crucial aspects of healthcare. Moreover, the importance of restoration and reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial defects lies in its ability to restore function, improve aesthetics, and support adjacent structures.
It not only addresses physical impairments but also contributes to the psychological well-being of patients. However, it is difficult to restore and reconstruct oral and maxillofacial defects because the skeletal shape of the maxillofacial region is complex, and the oral and maxillofacial region contains many vital nerves, blood vessels, and muscles, which makes the restoration and reconstruction of maxillofacial defects challenging.
This Methods Collection aims to provide a comprehensive resource focusing on various methods and techniques utilized in the restoration and reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial defects. We aim to compile a diverse range of methodologies, including surgical procedures, tissue engineering techniques, biomaterials, and other innovative approaches employed in this field.
It seeks to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of diagnostic and treatment methods and offer appropriate guidance. It is a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, and educators interested in advancing the restoration and reconstruction field by providing insights and inspiration for further research and innovation.
