Collection Overview

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) influence nearly all spheres of human activity, such as geonautics, aquanautics, aeronautics, and astronautics. These materials find application in catalysis, energy, environmental solutions, space exploration, defense, and infrastructure. Carbon fibers serve as the primary load-bearing component in CFRPs due to their exceptional strength, mechanical performance, and physicochemical properties.

However, the poor compatibility of carbon fibers with polymer matrices poses a significant challenge to the large-scale production and utility of CFRPs. The molecular-level interaction between the carbon fiber surface and the resin matrix is critical for achieving a strong interface between them. The surface polarity of the carbon fibers plays a key role in enhancing interfacial strength. Classical techniques such as XRD, Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR, NMR, SEM, and LC-MS provide insights into the structure, surface functionality, and morphology of carbon fibers. Additionally, advanced techniques like XRM, XSTM, and subatomic particle-based methods (e.g., neutron, proton, and electron analyses) offer vital clues about the interfaces of CFRPs.

This collection emphasizes the application of advanced analytical techniques for characterizing CFRP interfaces. Given this field's broad and interdisciplinary nature, submissions on carbon fibers, carbon-carbon composites, and related materials are also welcome.
