Luna Barroco de Lacerda is a Brazilian immunologist and vaccine researcher with a strong focus on malaria. She holds a PhD in health sciences from Fiocruz Minas and completed a doctoral exchange at Boston Children’s Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Luna earned her master’s degree in basic and applied immunology from the University of São Paulo and a bachelor’s in biotechnology from the Federal University of Amazonas. Her work spans immunobiological development, vaccine research, and adaptive immunity in Plasmodium infections, with early experience founding the Synthetic Biology Center in Manaus.

Collection Overview

Malaria is the deadliest vector-borne disease worldwide, and remains a significant global health challenge, with over 260 million cases and 600,000 deaths annually. The disease is caused by the parasite Plasmodium, which has a complex life cycle involving both human and mosquito hosts. This intricate cycle includes various morphological stages with high antigenic variability, making it difficult to study. For instance, Plasmodium vivax, which preferentially infects reticulocytes, is challenging to culture long-term in the laboratory, hindering our understanding of its host-parasite interactions.

To address the challenges in Plasmodium research, this method collection presents a comprehensive set of techniques for studying the parasite worldwide. It will serve as an essential resource for the scientific community, providing key methodologies to isolate and culture various Plasmodium species. Additionally, the collection will detail fundamental immunological methods crucial for investigating host-parasite interactions and the diverse immune responses elicited by infection.

This collection aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of malaria and accelerate the development of new strategies to combat this devastating disease.
