Dr. Kartik Rajagopalan, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where his laboratory uses mouse models to study how energy is regulated during infection. He earned his MD and PhD through the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at UT Southwestern Medical Center and completed his internal medicine residency and Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship at Rockefeller University.

Dr. Rajagopalan worked in the intensive care unit at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, an experience that inspired him to pursue the study of infection in the laboratory.

Collection Overview

During the COVID-19 and influenza pandemics, individuals with obesity experienced an increased risk of respiratory failure and death. As obesity rates continue to rise, understanding how dysregulated metabolism affects the response to infection is critical. Additionally, nutrient supplementation during infection remains poorly understood.

Further research is needed to determine how metabolism is regulated during infection using mouse models. This collection will include studies employing mouse models of infection in combination with measurements of food intake, weight changes, vital signs, and metabolomic profiles. Our methods integrate approaches from infectious disease and metabolism research to advance understanding of metabolic regulation during illness.
