Toulouse Biotechnology Institute

Dr. Zhongpeng Guo obtained his PhD in Fermentation Engineering from Jiangnan University (P. R. China) with Prof. Guiyang Shi where he developed different metabolic engineering strategies and improved the fermentation capacity of an industrial ethanol-producing Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Then he worked as a post-doc researcher with Prof. Lisbeth Olsson at Industrial Biotechnology group in Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. During this time, Dr. Guo performed detailed physiology studies combined with omics-analysis to better understand how yeast S. cerevisiae defend against the detrimental effects of toxic compounds present in the pretreated lignocellulosic biomass. With the better understanding of the mechanism of stress resistance of S. cerevisiae, he developed engineered yeast strains with high tolerance to inhibitors and with enhanced robustness in biomass conversion. Currently, he a researcher in Catalysis and Enzyme Molecular Engineering team (CIMEs) in Toulouse Biotechnology Institute (TBI), INSA-Toulouse. He is focusing on developing synthetic biology tools for the metabolic engineering of the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica for the production of fatty-acid derived chemicals from renewable sources.

Collection Overview

Of the many metabolic pathways found in nature, fatty acid biosynthesis plays vital roles in cellular biology. Beyond its typically role in cellular energy metabolism, fatty acids integrate and interact with signaling pathways, contribute to post-translational modifications of proteins (palmitoylation), and influence the membrane structure and function. Additionally, the valorization of fatty acids and their derivatives (e.g. esters, alkanes, olefins, ketones, alcohols, polyesters) drives further interest in metabolic engineering. They are involved manufacturing highly valuable products such as biofuels, detergents, cosmetics, lubricants, and pharmaceutical ingredients. The cellular lipids and fatty acids compositions are quite diverse among various biological systems. This makes fast and accurate quantification of lipids and fatty acids to be a difficult task especially when the target molecules are complex and rare low-abundance lipids and fatty acids species. In addition, high-throughput methods for fast screening of the cells producing lipids or fatty acids is highly desirable. This collection aims to cover the recent advances in methods developed for the analysis of lipids and fatty acids, from the sample preparation, separation, identification, and quantification.
