Steven Goudy
Emory University School of Medicine
Steven L. Goudy, MD, MBA, professor of otolaryngology, director of pediatric otolaryngology at Emory University School of Medicine, founding director of the ACGME-accredited pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Emory, and medical director of otolaryngology at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is dedicated to providing top-level surgical care to the children of Georgia. His clinical practice focuses on maxillary development, Pierre Robin sequence, vascular malformations, and velopharyngeal insufficiency. Working closely with colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Georgia Institute of Technology, and other local and state entities, Dr. Goudy and his team have developed novel and innovative solutions for care delivery that have brought value to families and improved treatment for patients. Dr. Goudy’s research is focused on defining the biologic processes that guide facial formation for the development of better approaches to regenerating damaged and deficient facial bone and improving wound healing after surgery or injury. Current research projects include an NIH-funded study to develop immunological approaches to improving oral cavity wound healing, and a foundation-supported effort to devise cranial facial bone regeneration techniques for pediatric bone replacement procedures. Dr. Goudy is dedicated to international service, particularly in the areas of surgical education and delivering surgical care to children with limited access to healthcare. He has traveled globally and performed mission work for more than 20 years in such countries as Guatemala and the Philippines, providing free surgical care to patients with cleft lip and cleft palate and engaging in medical education activities.

Martine Dunnwald
University of Iowa
Martine Dunnwald, PharmD, PhD, is a faculty member at the University of Iowa in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, where she teaches the anatomical sciences to professional and graduate students and directs a research lab focused on epithelial biology of the oral cavity and skin. Growing up in France, she trained as a pharmacist specializing in research. Pursuing her passion for epithelial biology, she moved to North America and received her PhD from Laval University (Québec, Canada). She discovered markers for hair follicle stem cells and developed novel tissue engineering models for recapitulating skin and tissue repair. Following a postdoctoral fellowship in epithelial differentiation and genetic skin disorders at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA), she established her research program at the University of Iowa in epithelial biology of the oral cavity and skin. Dr. Dunnwald’s research focuses on identifying molecular mechanisms regulating tissue repair and orofacial development. She takes advantage of the fact that, although seemingly distinct, these two processes share many signaling pathways and gene regulatory network, facilitating their study.
Craniofacial development is a complex choreography of cell patterning, migration, and differentiation. This collection will provide cutting edge approaches to the study of craniofacial developmental anomalies and pair these studies with regenerative approaches being used today and those that are under development. In this series we will demonstrate both in vitro and in vivo techniques being used today that are newly developed or recently applied from other fields of research. Examples of in vitro research will include the application of leader-follower cell behavior during oral cavity wound healing, and in vivo research will include the use of light-activated in-situ polymer induction to enhance craniofacial tissue regeneration.
