Physical inactivity is among the leading causes of death across the globe. Affecting individuals of all ages, regular exercise can improve overall health and quality of life, prevent chronic disease, and exert beneficial effects on nearly every system of the body. Likewise, lack of exercise or sedentary behavior can be quite harmful to health. Despite the large body of exercise-related research, many questions remain to be answered, ranging from creating effective mimetics to uncovering the motivations to exercise. Experimental in vivo animal models of exercise are critical to understand the mechanisms driving beneficial effects of exercise and to develop therapeutic strategies to treat chronic disease in an increasingly sedentary world.
The overall goal of this collection is to standardize methods of exercise interventions in non-human models as a means to enhance the rigor and reproducibility of exercise physiology research and to promote accessibility of these methods to a broader scientific community. To this end, this collection will focus on methodologies specific to exercise-related interventions, including disuse, aerobic exercise, and resistance exercise.
