She worked as a post-doctoral researcher at De Montfort University, Leicester, and the University of London, on improving the synthesis of natural products using plant cell cultures, and on purifying some new antimicrobial agents from herbal remedies, respectively. In 2003, she joined the University of Strathclyde where her research continues to be focused on the isolation and structure elucidation of natural products and on the discovery of new drug leads from natural sources. She is the author of many papers in the area of plant chemistry, phytochemical analysis, ethnopharmacology, and microbiology. She has served as the Honorary Treasurer of the Phytochemical Society of Europe and is currently on the editorial boards of Phytochemistry Letters, Scientific Reports, and Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
