Dr. Gerena did her undergraduate studies at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and obtained an ophthalmology specialization at Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro, Madrid, Spain. She is a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO). She is a faculty member of the Ophthalmology Department at the Hospital Universitario Sanitas la Moraleja, a teaching tutor at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, and a doctoral student at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Her main research interest is ophthalmology biomarkers using optical tomography coherence.
