Dr. Gerena did her undergraduate studies at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and obtained an ophthalmology specialization at Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro, Madrid, Spain. She is a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO). She is a faculty member of the Ophthalmology Department at the Hospital Universitario Sanitas la Moraleja, a teaching tutor at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, and a doctoral student at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Her main research interest is ophthalmology biomarkers using optical tomography coherence.

Collection Overview

A biological marker (biomarker) is a medical indicator that objectively indicates an individual's health and well-being. These can be anatomical, biochemical, molecular, or imaging characteristics. They can be measured through physical examination, laboratory testing, or medical imaging. Optical coherence tomography is helpful in clinical ophthalmology practice for refining diagnoses, assessing disease development, and forecasting and monitoring the impact of therapeutic interventions for ocular diseases.

This Methods Collection covers a broad range of fields, including basic research, and preclinical and clinical research, to highlight image analysis tools for discovering relevant retinal biomarkers. We hope that this approach to methods collection will encourage research on discovering novel biomarkers and potential new therapies in ophthalmology.
