Dr. Klazina Kooiman is an associate professor at the Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam in the department of Biomedical Engineering. Her group focuses on microbubbles for ultrasound molecular imaging and therapy with a special interest in vascular drug delivery and sonobactericide for bacterial infective endocarditis. The overall aim is to achieve maximum therapeutic outcome. Methods by which her group studies the underlying mechanism of the microbubble-cell-drug interaction include the ultra-high-speed camera Brandaris 128 (up to 25 million frames per second), to visualize microbubble vibration, coupled to a custom-built confocal microscope, to visualize the cellular response. Dr. Kooiman received her MSc (with distinction) in Biopharmaceutical Sciences, specialization Pharmaceutical Technology, from the University of Leiden and a PhD from Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam in 2011. She carried out post-doctoral research at the Center for Ultrasound Molecular Imaging and Therapeutics, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam before being appointed as assistant professor at Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam in 2015.
