Agency Assessment

Agency assessment is the evaluation of an individual’s capacity to initiate, guide, and regulate behavior, making it central to understanding intentional action and decision-making. It examines how people perceive control over their actions and outcomes, often using behavioral tasks, self-report measures, or observations of goal-directed performance. In behavioral research, agency assessment helps distinguish voluntary actions from externally driven responses and can reveal how motivation, feedback, social context, or cognitive processes shape behavior. These measures support the study of autonomy, responsibility, learning, and changes in self-control across development, health, and psychological conditions.

While previous research on bodily self-consciousness assumed that self- and other-origin movements were perceptually distinguishable, this protocol allows them to be ambiguous on a virtual hand with unintentional slight movements. This enables us to observe one’s experience formed by SoO and other-produced SoA, rather than the absence of SoA.

Phenotypic differences among cervid populations may be related to population-level genetics or nutrition; discerning which is difficult in the wild. This protocol describes how we designed a controlled study where nutritional variation was eliminated. We found that phenotypic variation of male white-tailed deer was more limited by nutrition than genetics.
