Automated Behavioral Data

Automated behavioral data are digitally recorded measurements of an organism’s actions, activity patterns, or responses, generated with limited or no direct human observation. In behavioral research, cameras, motion sensors, wearable devices, or software track features such as movement, location, duration, frequency, and social interactions, then convert observations into structured datasets for analysis. These methods support more consistent and scalable measurement than manual scoring alone, while enabling researchers to examine behavior over extended periods and across experimental conditions. Applications include studying learning, activity, social behavior, disease-related changes, and responses to environmental or experimental stimuli in laboratory and field settings.

Our laboratory developed a novel high-throughput automated imaging system that is useful for the detection of several different behaviors in 7-day-old zebrafish larvae. The system can be used for detecting subtle changes in behavior after the larvae have been exposed to environmental toxicants or pharmaceuticals.

A system for acquiring data from self-initiated individual behavior sessions within a social colony cage setting is presented. The efficacy of this system is demonstrated using an automated skilled reach assessment, enabling the characterization of post-stroke motor impairments, potential behavioral alterations related to motivation, circadian variations, and other innovative dependent variables.
