Cognitive Testing Paradigm

A cognitive testing paradigm is a structured experimental task used to measure mental processes such as attention, memory, learning, or decision-making through observable behavior. In a typical paradigm, researchers present controlled stimuli, require a defined response, and analyze outcomes including accuracy, reaction time, choice patterns, or learning across trials. By varying task demands or experimental conditions, investigators can isolate cognitive mechanisms and examine how they influence behavior. Cognitive testing paradigms support research in psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral science, providing standardized methods for comparing individuals, populations, and interventions while linking measurable performance to underlying cognitive function.

Task Interruption and Resumption Paradigm for Testing the Activation and Pursuit of an Abstract Thinking Goal

2017

This protocol was designed to test the activation and pursuit of cognitive goals (e.g., an abstract thinking goal) using the task interruption and resumption paradigm. The protocol is suitable for cognitive goals that are automatically pursued once activated, as the distraction procedure prevents goal pursuit during the interruption period.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University As an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science at Johns Hopkins University, I teach Introduction to Cognitive Psychology. This large class primarily consists of freshman and sophomores majoring in related fields, like Psychology, Neuroscience, or Cognitive Science. One of the challenges I face in the classroom is teaching students to appreciate how data are obtained in the process of performing experiments.

A Cognitive Paradigm to Investigate Interference in Working Memory by Distractions and Interruptions

2015

A novel cognitive paradigm is developed to elucidate behavioral and neural correlates of interference by to-be-ignored distractors versus interference by to-be-attended interruptors during a working memory task. In this manuscript, several variants of this paradigm are detailed, and data obtained with this paradigm in younger/older adult participants is reviewed.

2015

Fagot & Paleressompoulle1 have published an automated learning device (ALDM) aimed at testing individual cognitive abilities in semi-free ranging monkeys. The main goal of our protocol is to use a network of ALDM test units to study social cognition in non-human primates.

An Introduction to Cognition

2023

Cognition encompasses mental processes such as memory, perception, decision-making reasoning and language. Cognitive scientists are using a combination of behavioral and neuropsychological techniques to investigate the underlying neural substrates of cognition. They are interested in understanding how information is perceived, processed and how does it affect the final execution of behaviors. With this knowledge, researchers hope to develop new treatments for individuals with cognitive...
