Forced Exercise Rodents

Forced exercise rodents are laboratory animals required to perform physical activity, typically on a motorized treadmill or running wheel, so researchers can study how exercise influences behavior and physiology under controlled conditions. The apparatus sets variables such as speed, duration, and workload, while cues or gentle stimulation can encourage continued movement when an animal slows or stops. This approach supports research on locomotion, motivation, stress, learning, mood-related behavior, and exercise-induced changes in brain function, while allowing comparison with voluntary exercise models. Careful control of handling, intensity, and recovery is essential because forced activity can introduce stress that affects behavioral outcomes.

Getting to Compliance in Forced Exercise in Rodents: A Critical Standard to Evaluate Exercise Impact in Aging-related Disorders and Disease

2014

Exercise may alleviate behavioral impairments associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Studies of the mechanisms underlying exercise-mediated effects have increased in disease models, but the neurobiological background accompanying these diseases, specifically aging, is likely not considered. Here, we illustrate measures to increase the likelihood of a successful exercise paradigm in aged rats.

Assessment of Murine Exercise Endurance Without the Use of a Shock Grid: An Alternative to Forced Exercise

Environmental Enrichment for Rodents

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Environmental enrichment involves objects and practices that encourage natural behaviors, improve psychological well-being, and promote better welfare in laboratory rodents. Environmental enrichment should be tailored to the...

Activating Autophagy by Aerobic Exercise in Mice
