Joint Kinematics

Joint kinematics is the quantitative study of how body segments move relative to one another, providing a foundation for analyzing posture, coordination, and behavior. It describes joint position, displacement, angle, velocity, and acceleration within defined coordinate systems, often using motion-capture data to track movement over time without directly considering the forces that produce it. In behavioral research, joint kinematics helps characterize locomotion, reaching, balance, and skilled actions, allowing researchers to compare movement strategies, identify changes linked to development or disease, and evaluate motor performance in humans and other animals.

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates the kinematics of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions. This lab will begin by studying motion in 1 dimension, under constant acceleration, by launching a projectile directly upward and measuring the maximum height reached. This lab will verify that the maximum height reached is consistent with the kinematic...

This report presents details of how to adopt the acromion marker cluster method of obtaining scapular kinematics when using a passive marker motion capture device. As has been described in the literature, this method provides a robust, non-invasive, three-dimensional, dynamic and valid measurement of scapular kinematics, minimizing skin movement artifact.
