Leg Action Threshold

Leg action threshold is the minimum level of sensory or internal stimulation required to initiate a detectable movement of a leg, making it a useful measure of behavioral responsiveness. The threshold reflects how sensory inputs are integrated by neural circuits and converted into motor commands once excitation reaches the level needed to activate leg muscles. Researchers can quantify this response by varying stimulus intensity and recording whether, and how quickly, leg movement begins. Comparing thresholds helps characterize motor control, arousal, sensory sensitivity, and changes in behavior caused by environmental conditions, development, injury, or experimental treatment.

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

2023

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...

This protocol describes the electromyographic fatigue threshold which demarcates between nonfatiguing and fatiguing exercise workloads. This information could be used to develop a more individualized training program.

Muscles that Move the Leg

2024

The movement of the legs is facilitated by numerous muscles located within the anterior, medial, and posterior compartments of the thigh. Anterior Compartment The quadriceps femoris, the most visible muscle of the anterior compartment, is integral for leg extension and thigh flexion. It is formed by merging four distinct muscles — the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, and rectus femoris. The quadriceps tendon, a shared tendon of the four quadriceps muscles, is affixed to...
