Maternal Mental Health

Maternal mental health refers to a mother’s emotional, psychological, and behavioral well-being during pregnancy and the postpartum period, when mental health can affect daily functioning and family relationships. Hormonal changes, activation of stress-response systems, sleep disruption, physical recovery, and social conditions can influence mood, cognition, emotional regulation, and behavior, contributing to challenges such as anxiety or depression. In behavioral science, researchers use screening tools, clinical assessments, and observations of caregiving interactions to identify risk and evaluate support strategies. This work informs prevention, treatment, and early intervention while supporting maternal functioning, healthy parent-infant relationships, and child development.

Described herein is a protocol to isolate and analyze the infiltrating leukocytes of tissues at the maternal-fetal interface (uterus, decidua, and placenta) of mice. This protocol maintains the integrity of most cell surface markers and yields enough viable cells for downstream applications including flow cytometry analysis.

Described herein is a protocol to isolate and further study the infiltrating leukocytes of the decidua basalis and decidua parietalis - the human maternal-fetal interface. This protocol maintains the integrity of cell surface markers and yields enough viable cells for downstream applications as proven by flow cytometry analysis.
