National Identity

National identity is a shared sense of belonging to a nation, shaped by common histories, cultural symbols, political institutions, and ideas about membership. It influences behavior through socialization and social categorization: people learn national narratives and norms, then use perceived group membership to interpret events, form affiliations, and guide cooperation or distinction between groups. In behavioral research, studying national identity helps explain attitudes toward citizenship, collective action, migration, political participation, and relations with other national groups. Measuring its strength and content can clarify when identity promotes social cohesion and when it contributes to exclusion, polarization, or conflict.
