Navigational Skills

Navigational skills are the abilities used to determine location, select routes, and reach a goal through an environment, making them central to behavior and survival. Individuals combine sensory information, including visual landmarks, environmental gradients, proprioception, and optic flow, with memory and path integration to estimate position and guide movement. These processes support behaviors such as foraging, migration, homing, territory use, and avoiding hazards across diverse species. Studying navigational skills reveals how nervous systems transform spatial information into decisions and movement, while also informing research on spatial cognition, animal behavior, and autonomous navigation systems.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

Two-Dimensional Graphs Some chemistry experiments take the form of directly changing one property of the system that you are studying otherwise known as the independent variable, like temperature, and measuring the effects on another property, otherwise known as the dependent variable, like volume. Once the data have been collected, the interaction between the two parameters must be quantified — or converted into a form that can be evaluated — and compared to other relationships.

We describe a novel virtual-reality based setup which exploits voluntary control of one hand to improve motor-skill performance in the other (non-trained) hand. This is achieved by providing real-time movement-based sensory feedback as if the non-trained hand is moving. This new approach may be used to enhance rehabilitation of patients with unilateral hemiparesis.
